State and Federal Historic Tax Credits can provide a significant financial incentive to a property owner who undertakes a renovation to their historic residential or commercial property. Commercial historic renovation projects can receive a credit equal to 45% of eligible construction costs, 20% of which can be sold to a third party. Residential historic renovation projects can receive a 25% credit (50% for blighted buildings).
State and Federal Historic Commercial Tax Credit Incentives are available through the Louisiana State Office of Historic Preservation (SHPO) and the National Parks Service. The programs have eligibility requirements and guidelines, which must be met and approved by SHPO to in order to receive the credits. In most cases, architectural drawings are required to clearly indicate the scope of the renovation work.
